A work placement at leading office equipment company Sharples Group has seen an Accountancy student from Warrington Collegiate find his passion in life.

Andrew Highton was due to spend two weeks within the company’s Finance Department but his start was delayed when his dislocated his knee while doing Karate.

Determined to make the most of the fantastic opportunity organised through the Collegiate, Andrew – who is studying Level 3 Fast Track Accounting at the College – gave 110% to complete the placement in just four and a half days.

During his time at Sharples, 18-year-old Andrew posted supplier invoices, dealt with disputes, processed credits and even helped set up new accounts.

His hard work paid off, leaving a lasting impression on Financial Director Aimee Timmins.

She said: “By lunchtime on day two Andy had worked that hard and efficiently that we were ready to start on the investigative analysis and management accounts. I wouldn’t normally be ready to do this until at least five days into the placement so I’m completely amazed by his focus and by what he has achieved in such a short space of time.

“He puts the same level of effort into mundane tasks as he does with more interesting work and after spending the week with him, I think he’d make a splendid Management Accountant. He has a great personality and would fit into a company lifestyle very easily.”

As well as giving Andrew the opportunity to put the skills and knowledge he has learned during his time at Warrington Collegiate into practice, his time at Sharples Group also helped him make an important decision.

Andrew said: “I had been considering moving onto an apprenticeship as an electrician for a while but after spending the week at Sharples Group with Aimee, it has made me realise that I really do love Accountancy and it’s the career I want to pursue. I’m going to continue with it and give it my all.”

Aimee added: “Well done Andy on a fantastic work placement. You’ve really made the best of the opportunity and I’d like to thank you for making this week enjoyable for me. It’s great to meet such an enthusiastic accountant.”
