Talented rugby player Matthew Rudd will be flying the flag for Warrington & Vale Royal College this summer when he makes history as part of England Knights’ Under 19s squad.
16 year old Matt, from Lowton, will travel to Belgrade in Serbia in August as part of the Rugby League U10 European Championship, re-introduced by the RLEF after a 12-year gap.
Stand off Matt, who is completing the level 3 sport and exercise science course at the college’s Winwick Road campus, said: “It feels great to have been selected as part of England Knights’ Under 19s side – I feel really proud of myself.
“I’d love to make a career out of rugby league, whether it be as a player or working within the game in another capacity, and this is a great start. I can’t wait to get to Serbia – I’m really looking forward to it.”
The former Golborne High School pupil, who plays for Leigh East ARLFC as well as the college team, added: “The sport and exercise science course at Warrington & Vale Royal College has definitely helped me to develop as a player and a person. It has given me a huge confidence boost to go out and do this kind of thing.
“Sport is the only thing I’m really interested in and this course is helping me to pursue that goal. Even though Warrington & Vale Royal College isn’t as close to me as some colleges, the tutors made me feel really welcome and the course itself and what we’re learning and the opportunities we have make the travelling worthwhile.”
Ryan McNeely, lecturer in sport at the college, said: “Matt is an extremely talented rugby league player who deserves every bit of success. To secure a place within the under 19s side for England Knights is a fantastic achievement and something he should be incredibly proud of – this is a testament to the hard work and passion he has put into his game and his academic studies too.
“Travelling to Serbia and taking part in such a prestigious competition is an amazing opportunity for Matt. We wish him all the luck in the world.”
