As part of the 11th anniversary celebrations of National Apprenticeship Week, we’re shining the spotlight on a successful apprentice each day this week, sharing how an apprenticeship works for them.
Today, we’re shining the spotlight on Andy Turner, who is completing an ILM Level 5 apprenticeship through Warrington & Vale Royal College.
Andy Turner is a workshop supervisor at international logistics and supply chain company, Suttons Transport Group. He is a prime example of just how far an apprenticeship can take you.
The 32 year old began his apprenticeship journey with Suttons when he was just 17, completing a HGV qualification. He has since been promoted several times and now manages a team of 18 people.
Now enrolled on an ILM Level 5 apprenticeship for Operations/Department Managers, Andy said: “An apprenticeship has given me a career so far. My initial apprenticeship gave me the foundations to then move on to become a technician, get qualified and become a team leader.
“Since I became a supervisor, I wanted to do some kind of qualification in leadership and management and found this apprenticeship at Warrington & Vale Royal College, which Suttons have been able to pay for through the Apprenticeship Levy.”
Andy has only been enrolled on the apprenticeship for one month but already feels it is benefitting his career.
He said: “I feel like you learn more about the job role by actually doing the job role, rather than going to college full time, and that’s why an apprenticeship is good because it gives you that hands-on learning.
“I think the apprenticeship will help me massively, just from talking initially about the course. Even in the first month I feel like I’m already getting a lot out of it. It is going to be massive for my career.
“An apprenticeship works for me because it allows me continue with my job whilst attending college, giving me the tools and techniques to use in my job role.”
