Pupils from Culcheth High School have been given a sweet insight into the world of chocolate, thanks to a masterclass at Warrington & Vale Royal College.
Year 9 pupils India Walton and Emily Tickle spent the afternoon with course leader Scott Surtees, a chocolatier and pastry chef, making chocolate truffles, fondants and honeycomb toppings.
The masterclass came following India and Emily’s participation in the college’s Junior Masterchef competition last year, which saw them take first place after going up against pupils from Beamont Collegiate Academy, University Academy Warrington, St Gregory’s Catholic High School, Byrchall High School and Sir Thomas Boteler CE High School.
Each team was tasked with producing a chicken dish, as well as a pastry-based dessert, with India and Emily named as the winners for their mouth-watering concoctions.
Following their afternoon of creating chocolate delights, India said: “We’ve had a really good time – it’s been really enjoyable.”
Emily added: “It was a great experience. We’re not doing catering at school this year so it was great to be able to spend the afternoon making chocolate.”
Entries are currently open for this year’s Junior Masterchef competition, which takes place on Friday 22nd June. This year’s winners will receive £100 high street vouchers (split between the two team members) plus two signed copies of Aiden Byrne’s ‘Made in Great Britain’ recipe book.
Scott said: “It was great to be able to put India and Emily’s baking skills to the test with an afternoon of chocolate – they both seemed to really enjoy it.
“We’re currently taking menu submissions for this year’s Junior Masterchef and cannot wait to see what amazing food pupils come up with this year. Last year’s competition proved extremely difficult to judge as the standard of food produced was so incredibly high. This year, we’ll be looking for something extra special.”
