IT apprentice Jake lands hi-tech job at Daresbury Laboratory

Warrington & Vale Royal College IT Services Apprentice, Jake Ellis, has secured a position working as a Network Engineer at Daresbury Laboratory in Warrington. Jake began his apprenticeship at Warrington & Vale Royal College four years ago and has since completed a Level 3 Diploma in IT Support and a HNC in Computer Systems and Networking. Jake said: “I don’t really want to leave my colleagues here at the college, but it’s too good of an opportunity to pass up. It’s the next big step for me.

“I really can’t thank the staff at the college enough. My tutor’s Tim Evans, Maggie Adepetun and Rupon Miah, and my Apprenticeship Assessor Lisa Spencer, have been such a great support. The college’s Director of IT Services, Nick Smeltzer, has been a great mentor and someone to really look up to.”

Speaking on Jake’s departure, Nick said: “Jake has been a really valuable addition to our team. When he first started, we taught him the basics and had him shadow staff to learn on the job. Now, I am confident enough in his abilities to send him on his own to another campus to fix problems or install new equipment.

“He is constantly asking questions and is eager to learn new skills. We will really miss him, but wish him all the best for his future career.”

Jake completed an A Level in IT but wanted to gain valuable work experience alongside further study, so decided to pursue an apprenticeship instead of attending university. He hopes to remain at Daresbury Laboratory for the foreseeable future and to one day progress to Network Manager. “I want to always be learning,” says Jake. “My dream is to manage my own team of Network Engineers.”

We wish Jake the best of luck!
