The Supported Internship is a programme of study that is specifically designed to help 16-24 year olds with an Education, Health and Care Plan to gain the skills and experience they need to succeed in the world of work. Interns will combine up to 4 days a week work experience with an employer, with 1 day a week in college studying employability skills, English and maths. The course acts as a stepping stone between education and employment.
Our supported internships are for you if you have a learning disability or learning difficulty, but have a real willingness to work. The internships are specially adapted to maximise your skills and abilities.
The Supported Internship combines work experience with an employer and time in college to gain skills in Maths, English, and Employability.
You will learn about the world of work including how to behave in the workplace, practical skills, communication skills, customer service and how to present yourself. You will gain confidence in your communication, independence and practical skills.
Your Job Coach will support you throughout your internship, helping you to learn the role and provide you with any other training that you may need. They can accompany you to meetings and work trials with employers and help with anything you might need to be successful on your work placement.
The overall aim is to equip you with the skills you need to progress in the workplace.
You will have regular feedback from your Job Coach and the employer on your progress at work as well as English and Maths assessments when you are in college.
After the supported placements finish, it is hoped that you will secure paid employment either at your place of work or with local employers. You could also consider voluntary work or traineeships/apprenticeships.
We have links to many employers across Warrington and previous students have completed placements at Warrington Borough Council, IKEA, Nando's, Warrington Wolves and Warrington General Hospital. You will also complete your placement with a local employer that suits your preferences and ability.
