What is the course about?

This course is designed for students who wish to pursue a career as an employed and/or self-employed hairdresser/hairstylist. The course contains all the required elements to work effectively as a junior hairdresser/hairstylist. Throughout the course you will be supported to develop your knowledge, understanding, and the range of practical skills you need to succeed in a career in hairdressing. There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification but in order to optimise your chances of success, you will ideally hold a level 1 qualification or equivalent in hairdressing

This course will allow you to develop the full range of skills and experience you need to secure a career in hairdressing. Whether you already have some experience or are just starting out, this qualification will allow you to learn in a real salon environment and help you to achieve your career goals. The hairdressing sector is thriving, and you could secure a very lucrative career.

What will I learn?

You will study a range of different topics including:

  • Advising and consulting with clients
  • Blow-drying and styling hair
  • Colour and lightening hair
  • Cutting ladies’ hair
  • Setting and dressing hair
  • Shampooing, conditioning, and treating the hair and scalp
  • Styling hair with electrical equipment
  • Health, safety, and hygiene.

You will acquire knowledge of all relevant testing together with health, safety, and legislation requirements necessary for a junior hairdresser/stylist. You will also develop the knowledge, understanding, and skills to consult with clients as well as providing a range of basic cutting, colouring, and lightening services. Alongside these specific skills you will develop your communication, customer service, and commercial skills, all of which are valued highly by employers. Problem solving and research skills will also be developed throughout this course.

To be awarded this qualification, you must successfully complete all your practical assessments, update your e-portfolio and complete all knowledge requirements on Google Classroom which contribute to the overall success of the Level 2 qualification.

What will the course lead on to?

Whilst the primary purpose of this qualification is to prepare students for employment, you may also choose to develop your knowledge and skills further by completing a specialist qualification in one or more of the following areas:

  • L3 Diploma in Hairdressing
  • L2 Certificate in Barbering
  • L2 Certificate Beauty Specialist Techniques
  • L2 Certificate in Nail Technology

Are there any links with industry and university?

This is a college-based course, and your learning will be enhanced by engaging with employers. You will have opportunity to take part in workshop sessions that are provided by industry professionals throughout the academic year to ensure that you are able to experience the latest techniques first hand.

Various trips are organised throughout the academic year relating to all aspects of the industry. We also arrange for visiting guest speakers to come in and talk about their specialist area or their world of work.

The college is committed to ensuring that all our students benefit from the opportunity to undertake work experience whilst at college and we will support you to obtain a placement in a relevant vocational setting, enabling you to gain a taste of a real-life working environment.

You will be taught by tutors who are extremely passionate about their subject and have many years of extensive industry experience to share with you. There are no formal entry requirements for this course, besides an interest in hairdressing and a basic level of English.

Are there any additional costs associated with the course?

You will be expected to purchase a uniform to demonstrate your professional standards. You will also be expected to purchase a set of your own tools for your personal use, including a hairdryer, scissors, head block, combs, and brushes. Further details will be available on application.
