Level 3 Certificate Teaching Assistant

The Level 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools Certificate is suitable for you if you are recently employed as a teaching assistant or learning support assistant, or if you wish to gain employment in a school. The course will require you to show competence in both knowledge and skills.

This is a work-based qualification and placement in a school at key stage 1 or above is essential. The location of the placement will need to be within a reasonable distance from Warrington & Vale Royal college campuses as workplace observation is required and attendance will be required at the Warrington campus 1 evening per month (usually the first Wednesday or Thursday of every month).

Our Tuesday evening class will be delivered via an online workshop through Google Meet the first Tuesday of every month.

You will also be required to provide evidence of an Enhanced DBS . If you do not have a DBS, the college will process this as part of your enrolment for a fee of £38.00.

The course is delivered through an e-portfolio, therefore a PC with internet access is required. The course has various start dates throughout the year.

You will cover the following subjects on the course:

• Safeguarding the Welfare of Children and Young People
• Communication and Professional Relationships with Children, Young People and Adults
• Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in work with Children and Young People
• Schools as Organisations
• Support Learning Activities
• Help Improve Own and Team Practice in Schools
• Maintain and Support Relationships with Children and Young People
• Support Children and Young Peoples Positive Behaviour
• Support Children and Young Peoples Health & Safety

All units will be internally assessed. Methods on all qualifications will include written assignments and tasks set by assessors and will also include direct observation of performance and examination of work products. Methods may also include reflection on own practice in real work situations, learners own plans and written records of assessment, taped professional discussion, PowerPoint presentations and mentor testimony.

In addition, you will also complete a distance learning course: Level 2 Preparing to Work in Education - Understand Schools & Colleges. This is free of charge and will enhance and support achieving your qualification.

Credits and learning from the Certificate along with suitable employment enable direct progression onto the Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support in Teaching and Learning in Schools.

Through your employment, you will develop practical skills within the industry and the underpinning knowledge will be gained from taught sessions within the college.

Applicants must be working in a face-face role with children for at least one full day or two half days and have an enhanced DBS certificate (formerly CRB). Employment will need to be at Key Stage 1 or above. For those working in a school reception class or nursery class you should undertake the Certificate for the Children and Young Peoples Workforce.

We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a Welfare Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed. Additionally, eligible students can access a wide range of finance and funding support to help them during their time at college.

As this is a work based qualification a suitable work placement is necessary for you to access the course. Applicants must hold a level 2 qualification or have significant experience of working in schools.
