Level 2 Diploma Pre Access to HE

This exciting and informative programme has been designed to prepare adults for progression onto further college courses and university. If you have not studied for some time or don’t meet the entry requirements for one of our level 3 courses, this Pre-Access course will develop your confidence, knowledge, and academic capabilities. This year-long diploma covers a wide variety of essential and developmental skills. It contains units intended to introduce thought-provoking topics and prepare you for the workplace. The diploma course contains units relevant to a range of future professions and is a taster for what our level 3 courses include. You are able to study English or maths GCSE alongside the course.

The Pre-Access to higher education course is a great option for adults who have been out of education for some time or who want to refresh their academic skills in preparation for further study. Students will be taught academic writing skills, important research skills, and content which exposes the depth and breadth of health-based subjects. This course is perfect for anyone who hopes to study health, health sciences, care, nursing, social science, and social work at level 3. This course is a great first step into future studies and/or a new career.

You will study a variety of modules including academic units and units that are designed to develop personal skills. Units may vary slightly from year to year but generally include:

• Essay Writing
• Research Project
• Critical thinking
• Introduction to Psychology
• Introduction to Mental Health
• Introduction to Counselling
• Child and Young Person Development
• Sociology of Health
• Identity and Cultural Diversity
• Nutrition
• Psychology and Exercise

There are also dedicated adult English and maths courses available to prepare you for GCSE study if you do not hold these at grade 4/C or above.

You will be assessed during the course as each unit is taught and completed. A variety of methods will be used, such as essays, workbooks, and presentations. The course is delivered on a blended model, with most sessions being face to face and some parts delivered online.

After completion, you could progress on to an Access to Higher Education course:

• Access to HE – Nursing & Midwifery
• Access to HE – Health Professionals
• Access to HE – Social Work
• Access to HE – Science
• Access to HE – Social Sciences
• Access to HE – Paramedic Sciences

These courses are recognised by all universities for entry on to most degree subjects.

The tutors on the course have excellent links with industry professionals, and students will benefit from these working partnerships.

Universities expect adults who apply for some vocational degrees to have previous relevant paid or voluntary experience. Life and work experience is valuable, and applicants need to have spent some time out of school and have a high level of maturity.

We have a team of staff dedicated to providing learning support if required, as well as a Welfare Team that is on hand to offer guidance, support and help when needed. Additionally, eligible students can access a wide range of finance and funding support to help them during their time at college.

During you time on the Pre-Access to HE course, your learning will be enhanced by dedicated tutors who have a wide range of industry knowledge and experience. The college also houses a dedicated Health & Social Care Academy, which contains state-of-the-art facilities including a mock hospital ward. These outstanding facilities will ensure you gain valuable skills in a realistic setting, preparing you for further study and future employment. Throughout your course you will also benefit from our fantastic industry connections, which will enable you to gain valuable industry insight and hear from professionals currently working in the field. We have excellent progression rates on to higher education courses.

There are no pre-existing requirements from the Diploma in Pre-Access, however to progress to level 3 you must hold the relevant English and maths qualifications required for the pathway you wish to study. We would therefore expect you to be study English and maths alongside the course.

You will be required to undertake an assessment to determine the level of English and maths course.
